Infection Control During a Pandemic

The onset and rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus throughout the world have highlighted the vulnerability of every country to a novel infectious pathogen. In the U.S. alone, there have been almost 40 million cases since the beginning of the pandemic with over 550,000 deaths reported (Centers for Disease Control, 2021a). Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are vital to the fight to control the COVID-19 pandemic. They serve their communities by providing immunizations, dispensing prescription medications specific to COVID-19, and providing counseling for prescription and over-the-counter medications. The following course provides an overview of infection control as related to the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. and the steps that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can take to limit the spread among staff, other healthcare professionals, and patients.
