COPD is a preventable pulmonary disease that progresses slowly and is characterized by airway obstruction that is not completely reversible. There are two phenotypes of COPD: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Chronic bronchitis is defined as over secretion of mucus and a chronic productive cough that lasts for at least three months of the year for at least two years. Emphysema refers to the enlargement of gas-exchange airways and the destruction of alveolar walls without fibrotic changes.
