Plastic pollution is an environmental issue that is a major contributor to greenhouse gas production and global warming. The amount of plastic waste generated worldwide more than doubled from 156 million tons to 353 million tons between 2000 to 2019, but only 9% was recycled. Unfortunately, the global production of plastics is expected to rapidly increase over the next several decades.
